A Beginner's Guide to Krishnamurti Paddhati (KP) Astrology

Introduction

Krishnamurti Paddhati (KP) Astrology is a modern predictive system developed by Prof. K.S. Krishnamurti. While it is rooted in Vedic astrology, KP introduces a more systematic approach to answering specific life questions with greater precision.

If you already know traditional Vedic or Western astrology, you'll notice one major difference:

In KP Astrology, planets rarely act independently. Instead, they function as agents, delivering the results of the stars (nakshatras) they occupy.

This simple principle forms the foundation of the entire system.

1. The Golden Rule of KP Astrology

The most important rule in KP can be summarized as:

A planet gives the results of the Star Lord (Nakshatra Lord) in whose constellation it is placed. The nature of those results is modified by the planet's Sub Lord.

Think of it as a chain of command.

Component Role
Planet It is the Source - the actor or messenger. It delivers events.
Star Lord (STL) Determines Matter - what events and houses will manifest.
Sub Lord (SBL) Determines Quality of Result - whether those results are favourable, unfavourable, delayed, denied, or mixed.

An easy analogy:

  • Planet = Employee
  • Star Lord = Manager who assigns the work
  • Sub Lord = Final authority who approves or rejects the outcome

In KP, the Star Lord carries the greatest weight because it determines the actual house significations that the planet delivers.

2. The Building Blocks of a KP Horoscope

KP software organizes the horoscope into several tables that reveal these relationships.

The three most important are:

  1. Birth Chart
  2. Planets Table
  3. Cusps Table

The Birth Chart

KP uses the Placidus House System, unlike the equal-house method used in many traditional charts.

This means:

  • house cusps are not exactly 30° apart,
  • houses vary in size,
  • a zodiac sign may span more than one house,
  • and a house may begin in one sign and end in another.

Each house begins at a specific point called the cusp, and the cusp is the most important reference point for judging that area of life.

(Example chart: 10 August 1961, 10:55 AM, New Delhi, India.)

The Planets Table

The Planets Table shows where each planet is placed and identifies the hierarchy of rulers influencing it.

Planet Sign Degree Sign Lord Star Lord Sub Lord Significations
Sun Cancer 24°06' Moon Mercury Rahu 10, 12, 11, (2)
Moon Cancer 10°55' Moon Saturn Sun 4, 10, 5, (11)
Mars Virgo 2°28' Mercury Sun Jupiter 10, 11, 3, 7, 8
Mercury Cancer 19°19' Moon Mercury Ketu 10, 12, (1)
Jupiter (R) Capricorn 7°01' Saturn Sun Ketu 10, 4, 11, 6
Venus Gemini 14°15' Mercury Rahu Mercury 11, 9, 1, 2
Saturn (R) Capricorn 1°45' Saturn Sun Jupiter 10, 4, 11, 5
Rahu Leo 4°23' Sun Ketu Moon 5, 11, (10)
Ketu Aquarius 4°23' Saturn Mars Venus 11, 5, 3, 7, 8

Notice that every planet has three important rulers:

  • Sign Lord
  • Star Lord
  • Sub Lord

Among these, the Star Lord is the primary significator in KP analysis.

The Cusps Table

Every house cusp also has its own hierarchy of rulers.

The most important is the Cuspal Sub Lord (CSL).

The CSL is used to determine whether the matters represented by that house are promised in the birth chart.

Cusp Sign Degree Sign Lord Star Lord Sub Lord
I (Ascendant) Libra 0°23' Venus Mars Mercury
II Libra 29°08' Venus Jupiter Sun
VI Pisces 3°52' Jupiter Saturn Saturn
X Cancer 1°44' Moon Jupiter Rahu
XI Leo 3°47' Sun Ketu Moon

A fundamental KP principle is:

The Cuspal Sub Lord indicates whether the affairs of that house are promised, while the houses signified by the CSL's Star Lord reveal the nature of those promised results.

3. A Practical Method for Judging Any Question

Whenever analysing a horoscope, follow the same sequence.

Step 1 — Identify the Relevant Houses

Every life event is represented by one or more houses.

Examples:

Topic Houses
Wealth 2, 6, 10, 11
Marriage 2, 7, 11
Career 2, 6, 10, 11
Health 1, 6, 8, 12
Education 4, 5, 9
Property 4, 11
Foreign travel 3, 9, 12

Step 2 — Find the Cuspal Sub Lord

Locate the cusp governing the question.

For example:

  • marriage → 7th cusp
  • career → 10th cusp
  • wealth → 2nd and 11th cusps

The CSL is the key to judging whether that matter is promised.

Step 3 — Examine the CSL's Star Lord

The Star Lord of the CSL shows which houses are activated.

These house significations form the foundation of the prediction.

Step 4 — Examine the CSL's Sub Lord

Finally, assess the Sub Lord's own significations and relationships.

The Sub Lord refines the outcome by indicating whether the promised event is likely to manifest smoothly, face obstacles, be delayed, denied, or produce mixed results.

4. Worked Examples

Example A — Financial Prosperity

Relevant houses:

  • 2nd (wealth)
  • 6th (service and earning through work)
  • 10th (profession)
  • 11th (income and gains)

Step 1

The 2nd cusp has Sun as its Sub Lord.

Step 2

The Sun occupies the star of Mercury.

Mercury signifies:

  • 10th house
  • 12th house

This indicates that wealth is connected primarily with career and professional activity.

Step 3

The Sun's Sub Lord is Rahu.

Rahu signifies:

  • 11th house
  • 5th house

The strong involvement of the 11th house supports gains, fulfilment of desires, and financial growth.

Interpretation

The combination of:

  • 10th house (profession)
  • 11th house (income)

is a classic indicator of earning through one's career.

The chart therefore promises financial gains, particularly through professional pursuits.

Example B — Health

Relevant houses:

  • 1st (body)
  • 6th (disease)
  • 8th (chronic issues)
  • 12th (hospitalization and confinement)

Step 1

The Ascendant's Cuspal Sub Lord is Mercury.

Mercury signifies:

  • 10th
  • 12th

The connection with the 12th house suggests periods involving rest, treatment, or medical expenditure.

Step 2

The 6th cusp has Saturn as its Sub Lord.

Saturn occupies the star of the Sun and is placed in the sub of Jupiter.

Jupiter has a strong connection with the 6th house.

Interpretation

The links among:

  • 1st house
  • 6th house
  • 12th house

suggest that health concerns are part of the natal promise.

During suitable planetary periods, the native may experience illness, treatment, or recovery requiring increased medical attention.

5. Timing Events in KP Astrology

A birth chart may promise an event, but timing determines when it occurs.

KP relies primarily on two timing tools:

1. Dasa–Bhukti–Antara Periods

Events tend to materialize when the operating planetary periods involve significators of the relevant houses.

For example:

Career advancement is more likely during periods involving planets connected with:

  • 2
  • 6
  • 10
  • 11

Marriage is more likely during periods involving:

  • 2
  • 7
  • 11

The stronger the house connections, the greater the likelihood of the event.

2. Transits

Transits act as the final trigger.

When the operating Dasa lords and fast-moving planets—especially the Moon and Sun—transit relevant stars and subs connected with the promised houses, the event may manifest.

In KP, transits are generally considered effective only when the natal promise and the operating Dasa periods already support the event.

6. A Simple Workflow for Every Prediction

Whenever you analyse a chart, follow this sequence:

  1. Identify the houses related to the question.
  2. Examine the relevant house cusp.
  3. Find its Cuspal Sub Lord.
  4. Study the CSL's Star Lord and house significations.
  5. Assess the CSL's Sub Lord for the quality of the result.
  6. Confirm the natal promise.
  7. Check the running Dasa–Bhukti–Antara periods.
  8. Use transits to narrow the timing.

Following this workflow ensures that every prediction is made consistently and systematically.

Practice Exercise

Open the native's chart in your KP software.

Choose a known life event—for example:

  • first job,
  • marriage,
  • promotion,
  • major illness,
  • purchase of property.

Then:

  1. Identify the relevant houses.
  2. Examine the appropriate Cuspal Sub Lord.
  3. Note the houses signified by its Star Lord.
  4. Check the Dasa–Bhukti–Antara running at that time.
  5. Finally, observe the transits of the Dasa lords and the Moon.

Repeating this exercise across multiple events is one of the fastest ways to develop confidence in KP Astrology and understand how natal promise, planetary periods, and transits work together.

💡 Tip for the Student: Open the native's Dasa Navigator tab in the software. Pick a prominent date from the native's past—such as a major job change or an illness—and check the active Dasa planets. You will quickly see them pointing precisely to the house combinations highlighted in this guide!
